English/Italian City of Dragons
Have most of you read the English version of City of Dragons by now or have you been waiting for the Italian translation...or both?
Which version of the books do you find that you prefer? It is interesting that many Hobb fans seem to prefer to read them in the language that they are originally written in (English) rather than their own language...so I wonder if this is also true of Italian fans? |

RE: English/Italian City of Dragons
Personally, I prefer to read the original editions because waiting times are shorter, prices are lower and... and the covers are so much better!!! Look at the original cover and then at the Italian one...

RE: English/Italian City of Dragons
I completely agree with The Fool, and I add: every (good) writer palys with words, and every language has its peculiar referencces, which are mostly impossible to translate; reading the original thing is always to prefer, in my opinion.
And you can find terrible translastions, also: the first book by Guy Gavriel Kay I tried was in Italian, and it was such a mess that when I checked the original novel seemed to be entirely another (a better) writer. I haven't recuvered from the shock yet. One does not need the size of a dragon to have the soul of a dragon. Robin Hobb |

What appears on the Italian cover as the title for the series: Rain Wild Chronicles or Rain Wilds Chronicles? I have long noticed that this (Rain Wild vs Rain Wilds) is a consistent difference between the UK and US versions. Good point re a writer's own way with word play, Tintaglia. I feel so hampered by my limits to only one language...it is just beyond my ability to comprehend what it must be like for you all to juggle translations! |

I haven't recuvered from the shock yet. Sad but true. We have often horrible translations, and an example is the Italian edition of Soldier Son: three books, three different translators and a very poor job, full of misprints and bad mistakes... really awful. Oh, I've just read your question on the newsgroup Thank you for asking, Robin's answer is very interesting! Here it is for whoever is interested: Robin Hobb Ha scritto:My fault entirely. I try to give language in the books a regional slant. It doesn't always 'translate' editorially. About Italian editions, we use the plural form: "Giungle della Pioggia" for "Rain Wilds".
