On Names
I have to get this out of my system.
Can somebody tell me why spoiler - Blood of Dragons [leggi] I mean, it it obvious that Robin Hobb sometimes choose names on the time-honored manner of throwing the Scrabble lid upside down and seeing what comes out of it, but come on. Boy-O?! Anybody has any idea? Nobody? I've never seen the Icarus story as a lesson about the limitations of humans.
I see it as a lesson about the limitations of wax. “What else should you be? Human beings didn't evolve brains in order to lie around on lakes. Killing's the first thing we learned. And a good thing we did, or we'd be dead, and the tigers would own the earth.” ― Orson Scott Card, Ender's Game |

Boy-O?! You know: I tried to get an explanation from Robin on Goodreads, but she couldn't answer all the questions... I'll take another chance as soon as possible, I NEED to know where she get the idea for such an awful name! PS: In Rome I asked about the name Marietta, which sounds strangely Italian. She thought it sounded French, instead. ;-) Occhi-di-notte Ha scritto: |

RE: On Names
Sure he has a name that starts with the O letter. Sure.
It's like my calling my sister Gaia just G. The G-girl. So, Boy-O. |

RE: On Names
The way the name was used makes it pretty clear... it's just his name. We knew RH wasn't the best with names (Keppet, anyone? Prilkop?) but this one... ~sigh~

RE: On Names
Except it wasn't "O-boy", it was "Boy-O." That IS a word in English... sort of... and it doesn't in any way indicate that O is an initial. I might, MAYBE, get called "L girl" by somebody, but "Girl L" doesn't work at all.

Boy-O. Poor, poor soul. I've never seen the Icarus story as a lesson about the limitations of humans.
