"When I first finished Tawny Man, I did intend to go back and write more about Fitz and the Fool. But I also needed a break as, for some reason, writing in first person with a character like Fitz can be very draining. I'd had Soldier Son in my head for some time and it was time to let it out. So I had planned to allow myself some time away from Fitz. But then, the reaction to the ending let me know that for many people, the story had gone in a direction they didn't particularly enjoy. Some of the email and comments were pretty rough. That I had 'chickened out' for example or had for whatever reason modified the ending. (Never understood that comment; why would I modify the ending?) Anyway. When that happens, you can blame the readers for being insensitive clods. Or, the author can look at the work and say, "Hm. Maybe I'm the only one enjoying this." Or, "Is what I am writing down being read in a different way by others?" Those are both pretty immense and extremely valid statements to consider when one is telling a story. They take time to think over. So, all during the writing of Soldier Son, I thought about it. And I concluded that I wouldn't go back to Fitz and the Fool, at least not as I had originally imagined it. At this point, I don't know that I COULD go back and write what I had originally envisioned. I think that books are often a product of a certain time in a writer's life. Delay too long, and the book just isn't going to come together as you first imagined it. There are stories I could have written at 22 that I cannot write at 57. This is a natural consequence of getting older. And I've had it happen before. When I was writing as Megan Lindholm, I'd envisioned a long series of adventures for Ki and Vandien and that world. But I changed publishers and editors and those stories stopped. Even in the opportunity presented itself, I don't think I could back to them and write them well after all this time has passed. But, in all honesty, it's also influenced by reader feedback. The Internet means that authors get a LOT of reader feedback these days and much of it is instantaneous and no holds barred. And no one can claim to be immune to audience reaction. I'll invoke Tedrick here, since I think he's done stand up comedy. The reaction of the audience, I suspect, is very intense in such a live situation. A joke you might have told with confidence to a previous audience, knowing they'd go along with it and laugh may be your death knell to a different audience, especially one that is annoyed with you or doubts you. When a comic or a writer becomes uncertain, it's very difficult to deliver what you'd been building up to with the same confidence and verve. In that sense, fan fiction can, for me, be compared to a heckler in the audience. Once the mental flow is disrupted or diverted or mocked, it's hard to proceed on the once-chosen path with the same sort of focus. But I'm not going to get into a fan fiction discussion here, pro or con. In the case of a stand up comic, a really adept player on the stage can think quickly and divert the line of humor into something that will get the audience with him (or her) again. That's why I find good stand-up so dazzling. Those comics think on their feet and come up with amazing stuff. (To see what I mean, catch an episode of Whose Line Is It? Especially the SONGS!) Unfortunately for me, I'm not that fast. I stand there flat-footed with the spotlight in my eyes going, "Uh, er, well, um, uh, well, what happened next was this, I think . . . " And that doesn't work. So, when I say that I'll write about Fitz and the Fool if I can come up with a truly compelling story line, I mean one that fits with everything that has gone before and still says something new and exciting about the world and the character; that's what I'm talking about. I'm waiting for inspiration and the Muse to hit me with something that works for me and that I can write with certainty. I know that my agent would love me to do this. And both my editors. And numerous readers would like me to go back to the story. But until I'm sure I can go back to the tale and not wreck it for myself or the characters, I think I'll hold back. I'd rather leave it as it is than topple the whole house of cards. It's not too bad, as it stands. And my head is full of stories. Including the one that I'm supposed to be working on right now . . .

One does not need the size of a dragon to have the soul of a dragon. Robin Hobb |
